What do all the Indian bikers think of the Americans always bickering over riding styles?

Author: admin  //  Category: Scooter Riders

Do scooter riders bicker with Enfield loyalists?

Is that red or curried?? no racial slur intended.. & I apologise to anyone I offend with my attempt at humor..

Its so hard being politically correct… especially for us old fellas..

Multiple questions from a new rider?

Author: admin  //  Category: Scooter Accessories

I am looking to get a motorcycle. I had a 150cc scooter some time back and it gave me the itch…

First, I am 6′3″ and 250 lbs. I don’t know how much that matters, but it may help in your considerations.

-What is the best class to take to learn how to properly ride a motorcycle and get the best safety course? I am particularly interested in knowing how to lay down a bike if it comes down to it and how to handle the bike if I were to lose control due to a blown tire, hitting a rock, sliding over loose gravel, etc. Bonus if you can give me a specific course in the DFW area.

-What would be a good beginner bike for me? I want something I can feel comfortable learning with, but also growing with. I would like to take it to work (25 miles each way, straight highway, but I do a lot of downtown driving as well) within 6 months (or whenever I feel comfortable with it). I prefer cruisers and I prefer something with decent efficiency, but with enough pickup to get me past a big rig. I don’t have a lot to spend, but plan on around $6,000-$8,000 with all gear. (less is better)

-What accessories would you recommend? I work in IT, so I would have to carry my laptop around with me.

Is there anything I should know about starting out?

Thanks for the help!

1) Check out MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) courses in your area. They will teach you the basics and get you started safely.

http://nm.msf-usa.org/msf/ridercourses.aspx?state=TX

You can take the course on a hired bike, which will give you an idea of what you want to buy, or on your own bike if you buy one. I recommend the hired option, because a lot of folks lay the bike down during these courses…

2) Good beginner bike size for what you’re doing would be a 250 or 500. I’d probably go with 500 because of the highway riding you describe (Suzuki GS500, Kawasaki Ex500 Ninja, Buell Blast 500). Get a windshield for highway comfort and thank yourself a million times over.

3) Generally you should be able to pick up a brand new bike of this size for around $4k or less. Since it’s your first bike you will drop it, so get a used one for about $2k, then sell it once you have some experience and know what bike you want next. Also I’d recommend getting one of the above models instead of a cruiser, just at first, because of the riding you’re doing around town and because of the available models/price factor, and because small cruisers aren’t too great for the taller person.

4) I commute daily and tie my laptop bag to the passenger seat with bungee cords. Make sure the bike you buy has ‘anchor points’ (somewhere to attach the bungees). The other option would be to buy ’soft luggage’ (removable side bags) and put the laptop in one of those.

Good luck! Always great to welcome a new biker to the roads!
